Musical bands in Australia

Leveraging the strong brand that Canadian music enjoys in Australia, the Consulate General is focused on introducing emerging talent to the vibrant Australian music festival market, and to the opportunities for touring.

In 2015, the Canadian Music Week features a Spotlight on Australia, with a large industry delegation attending the conference and several great Aussie bands making the journey to showcase in Toronto, May 6-9th.

Indigenous band Digging Roots made the journey for the Australasian World Music Expo in Melbourne in 2014, sharing a showcase stage with down-south styled artist Kim Wempe. Watch the video here.

We sat down with Sounds Australia’s Glenn Dickie to hear about the natural affinity between Canadian and Australian artists and audiences, and how to leverage touring and audience building opportunities.

Chloe Goodyear of The Woodford Festival tells us just how much Australian audiences love Canadian artists. 2014 was another great year for Canadians at Woodford; the lineup featured The East Pointers with Koady Chaisson, Tim Chaisson and Jake Charron, David Francey, Delhi2Dublin, Del Barber, Jenn Grant, Matt Anderson, Jen Allen and Kat Dancer.

Stuart Johnson of the Canadian Independent Music Association talks about the business of music and trade between Australia and Canada.

To help develop these opportunities, the Consulate has promoted participation in Canadian music marketing events, specifically Canadian Music Week and the East Coast Music Awards, and regularly supports Canadian artists travelling to participate in Bigsound Festival.

We were proud to get in on the action, licensing a song by Canadian/Australian songwriting duo Dylan Wright and Andy Brown for our own Canadian Down Under video.
