Appointment of an Honorary Consul of Canada in Melbourne

Canberra October 01, 2022

The High Commission of Canada to Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sophie Galaise as the Honorary Consul of Canada in Melbourne, Australia.

The appointment of Dr. Galaise will contribute to the visibility and presence of Canada, and highlight the many connections in Melbourne. The role aims to increase exposure to Canada and its diversity, its environment rich in experiences for young Melbournians, its feminist foreign policy and its effort to enhance trade for shared and inclusive prosperity.

A resident of Melbourne, Dr. Galaise brings great value as Honorary Consul of Canada in Melbourne. Sophie Galaise joined the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as its first female Managing Director in April 2016. Sophie has been on the board of Symphony Services International since 2013 and became its Chair in November 2021.

She is a member of the Advisory Council of the Harvard Business Review, the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and the CEO Institute in Australia. She is also a member of the International Advisory Committee of the only Master in International Arts Management (MMIAM), a program offered by Southern Methodist University (Dallas), SDA Bocconi (Milan) and HEC (Montreal). This unique program trains the next generation of managers and prepares them to work abroad or with foreign organisations.

Prior to her appointment to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sophie was Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Previous roles include Executive Director of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Executive and Artistic Director of the Orford Arts Centre and Music Coordinator for the Quebec Arts Council. Dr. Galaise is a Flutist with a Ph.D. in Musicology and Executive MBA, and has worked in 3 different universities in Canada.

Dr. Galiase looks forward to raising the profile of Canada’s many strengths and advocating key messages to increase opportunities for new connections between our two countries.

Currently, Canada is the G7 member state with the second highest economic growth (source: IMF), the easiest country to start a business in the G20 (source: World bank), and its population is among the most educated in the world. Canada is also a global centre for innovation with strategic investments in education, sciences and industries.

With 15 free trade agreements covering 1.5 billion consumers and access to a combined GDP of 50 billion dollars, Canada is one of the most open and connected economies in the world.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which both Canada and Australia are signatories, provides new opportunities and drives increased economic activities.

Canada’s commercial relationship with Australia is strong and diversified. In addition to traditional sectors such as mining and transportation, Canada and Australia can enhance collaboration in infrastructure, defense, agri-food, information and communication technology (ICT), creative industries, health industries, and clean technology.
